How to Get Away With Murder is a dark and twisty show. Gilmore Girls, most decidedly is not. And the idea of having to toggle between the two very different worlds in the same year left actress Liza Weil a little apprehensive.
While the erstwhile Paris Geller in the beloved WB series was no doubt thrilled to receive the call to step back into those fastidious shoes of her beloved character for the upcoming Netflix revival, there was some concern about whether her new character on the ABC thriller, Annalise Keating’s (Viola Davis) right hand woman Bonnie Winterbottom—and the inherent darkness that comes with her—might seep into the goings on in Stars Hollow.
“I was worried,” Weil told E! News. “I was definitely worried because I had wrapped season two of Murder and I think, like, the next day or two days later, I was on set on Gilmore Girls.”
Despite her concern Weil admitted that the hyper-specific writing from creator Amy Sherman-Palladino and her husband, executive producer Dan Palladino, set her at ease. So much so that working on the revival series was something of a lovely vacation from all the murdery Murder.
“But I will say that Amy and Dan’s writing, it just really does the trick for me. Paris is so alive in that writing and it’s just very, very different from Bonnie,” Weil said. “It was actually a very welcome sort of respite from Bonnie. It felt nice to be a little bit more broad and all of those Paris Geller-y things. And then I had a good cushion of time before going back to Bonnie, but I will say, yeah, it’s Amy and Dan and it’s [Murder creator] Pete [Nowalk] and you read those scripts and it’s all on the page. It certainly made it easier.”
Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life picks up almost 10 years after fans were made to say goodbye to Lorelai and Rory Gilmore. Joining Weil and series stars Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel in the four-part revival are, well, nearly everyone. Luke Patterson, Melissa McCarthy, Kelly Bishop, Keiko Agena, Yanic Truesdale, Sean Gunn, Liza Weil, Danny Strong, Matt Czuchry, Jared Padelicki, and Milo Ventimiglia are all set to appear.
All four episode of Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life hit Netflix on Friday, Nov. 25. In the meantime, you can catch Weil on How to Get Away With Murder Thursdays at 10 p.m. on ABC.
