Camping, the 2016 Sky comedy from Julia Davis, is to be remade in America.

Girls creators Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner are working on adapting the scripts to form an 8 episode series for HBO.

Camping, which was first shown on Sky Atlantic in April 2016, followed the quarrelling and love triangles that occurred between a mismatched group of friends who are taking a camping trip together to celebrate one of the character’s birthdays.

Vicki Pepperdine, Steve Pemberton, Rufus Jones, Jonathan Cake, Elizabeth Berrington and David Bamber starred alongside writer and director Julia Davis in the original six episodes, which were noted for their dark humour.

Alias and Catch Me If You Can star Jennifer Garner looks set to take on the lead role in the new version.

The premise of the US series will be similar to that of the original, but with the character names changed. Variety reports: “It tells the story of Walt’s 45th birthday, which was supposed to be a delightful weekend back to nature, at least according to his obsessively organised and aggressively controlling wife Kathryn. But when the camping trip gathers Kathryn’s meek sister, holier than thou ex-best friend and a free-spirited Tagalong in one place, it becomes a weekend of tested marriages and woman on woman crime that won’t soon be forgotten.”

Konner and Dunham describe Garner’s character Kathryn Siddell-Bauers as “messy, tough and provocative and really really fun”. Speaking to Variety, they said: “We love Jennifer’s restraint and comedic timing, and we can’t wait for the warmth and intelligence she’ll bring to our central character, Kathryn. It’s truly a dream to have her first on our call sheet. Now we just have to write her some stunts.”

Production is set to begin on the series latest this year. Christine Langan, from UK production company Baby Cow, and Julia Davis act as Executive Producers on the project.
