The hit sitcom’s second series left viewers on a cliffhanger earlier in the year as to whether colleagues John and Kayleigh would become a couple. One online petition demanding a conclusion to the series gathered more than 100,000 signatures.
Now, the stars have announced that a concluding “season finale” was filmed alongside the four episodes of Series 2, to be broadcast in 2018.
Peter Kay says: “We were completely overwhelmed by the response and even though we’ve no plans to write a third series we knew we couldn’t end the story there.”
The stars have also made a separate standalone half-hour special, unconnected to the series storylines, which was filmed without a script. The entirely improvised episode looks set to feature Kay and Gibson alone in the car, and will be broadcast on BBC One this Christmas.
Immediately after the announcment was made, the sitcom’s producer, Gill Isles, tweeted:
The finale episode is set the day after the conclusion of Series 2, revealing just what happens next to John and Kayleigh, and will conclude a repeat run of the four-part second series.
Charlotte Moore, Director of BBC Content says: “I know it will be music to the ears of millions of fans of Peter Kay‘s joyous award winning comedy to hear that Kayleigh and John will be coming back for one last time with a very special finale episode in 2018.”
Shane Allen, Controller Comedy Commissioning says: “Car Share has been the hit comedy of 2017 with audiences of over 11 million. This new finale is going to be the TV comedy equivalent of the Moon landing, ‘Who Shot J.R.?’ or the Olympics Opening Ceremony, depending on how old you are.”
Yesterday, Peter Kay announced his first live tour in 8 years. Tickets go on sale this Sunday morning, at 10am, including via Ticketmaster
